Ideas on Pieces and Themes
How can I represent my people and culture authentically?
Theme Idea:
Traditional life In Samoa, back in the days when my father was still a boy and my grandfather was fighting for the independence of the Samoan people, of my people. So that they were free to hold on to their traditions and culture; their way of life.

1 Piece:
For my first piece I am considering drawing a scene in involving an elderly woman demonstrating to a young child how to plant a crop on the farm. They will be wearing traditional Samoan outfits and the elderly woman will have a peaceful face (smile) and the child will have a face of wonder. They will be planting a mango tree.

2 Piece:
For my 2nd piece I am considering drawing a scene in involving a young boy on his horse, riding down a dirt road with the groceries from the store tightly clasped in his hand. In the background you can see a small house and a grassy field on one side of the road, and a jungle on the other. I want to try a perspective involving being close to the boy's front to exaggerate the feeling of depth.

3 Piece:
For my 3rd piece I am considering drawing a scene in involving three women, an elder, a young mother, and her daughter. These three women will all be weaving a traditional Samoan mat, to illustrate this age old tradition being passed down through generation.
4 Piece:
For my 4th piece I am considering drawing a scene involving a samoan family dressed in formal wear going to church, to portray how there is a loss of culture as the Samoan people adapt the Christian religion.
5 Piece:
For my 5th piece I am considering drawing my grandfather as the chief he once was, my father sitting just below but by my grandfathers left side to and his other brother on his fathers right side. Although I will have my grandfather place his hand on the shoulder of my father to show how he is the next to inherit the chief mantel and then my brother will be in my dads lap as a baby, representing the future generation of chiefs in my family.
